Architectural Deep Dive

The Power of Data Locality in Distributed Storage

In traditional 3-tier IT, a virtual machine running on a server must send its read/write requests across the network switch to an external SAN. Hyper-Converged Infrastructure uses distributed software-defined storage (like Ceph or Nutanix DSF) to ensure Data Locality. Whenever possible, the HCI hypervisor reads and writes data directly to the local NVMe drives inside that exact physical node. This local data pathing drastically cuts down network latency and eliminates switch congestion.

1-Click Linear Scale-Out

Forecasting IT growth for 3 to 5 years is notoriously difficult. HCI solves this through modular scaling. When your virtual machines consume 80% of your current cluster’s RAM or storage, you simply slide an additional HCI node into the rack, plug in power and network cables, and click “Expand Cluster.” The software automatically discovers the new node, rebalances the distributed storage pool, and instantly adds the new compute and storage capacity with zero downtime.

Resiliency via Replication & Erasure Coding

HCI eliminates single points of failure. Using configurable Replication Factors (RF2 or RF3) or distributed Erasure Coding, data written on one node is instantly replicated across other physical nodes in the cluster. If an entire server suffers a catastrophic power or hardware failure, the cluster automatically reconstructs missing data blocks on healthy nodes while virtual machines seamlessly live-migrate and resume execution on surviving hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) differ from a traditional Server + SAN setup?

A traditional setup keeps compute servers and storage SAN arrays physically separate, requiring complex fibre channel zoning and independent management tools. HCI converges compute, storage, and networking into identical modular nodes, running everything through a single software-defined layer and managing it from one unified dashboard.

Can we run HCI with only two or three nodes at a remote branch office?

Yes. While standard distributed storage requires at least three nodes to achieve quorum, we architect specialized 2-node edge clusters with a lightweight software witness or 3-node minimal quorum pods specifically designed for remote offices, retail stores, and manufacturing floors without local IT staff.

What happens to our virtual machines if an HCI node fails completely?

Because HCI pools and replicates data across all nodes in the cluster, an entire physical node can fail without data loss. High-Availability (HA) algorithms automatically detect the failure and spin up the affected virtual machines on surviving physical nodes within seconds.

Is HCI suitable for running high-performance databases?

Yes. Modern HCI platforms utilize all-flash NVMe storage and kernel-bypass networking, delivering sub-millisecond I/O latencies that easily support enterprise relational databases, ERP systems, and transactional workloads.
